Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant, just like Google Assistant is Google's voice assistant. You can communicate with Alexa via a smart speaker or via your smartphone. This way you can ask Alexa all kinds of questions , such as what time is it, what is the weather today or what is planned for today. These questions are also called Alexa commands.
The questions you can ask Alexa can be information, but you can also give Alexa commands. Think of assignments such as put in the agenda that I have an appointment at the dentist at 14:00, but you can also switch the light on or off with these assignments. To carry out these commands, you must have smart devices and link them with your Alexa account.
How does that work?
First of all, you need to have an Amazon Alexa account. You can create this with the Alexa app. You can then, for example, link devices with your Alexa account in the app. There are many different devices that you can connect, such as Philips Hue or Ring security products. You can then operate these devices with speech. You can do this via the app, but if you have an Amazon Dot you can also do this via the smart speaker. To activate Alexa, say: “Hey Alexa”.
There are plenty of products and devices that you can pair with Alexa. Smart bulbs are one of the most used devices and are ideal to start when you want to control devices with speech. For example, you can give Alexa commands to turn the lights on or off or to start a certain scene.
